Unable to sleep, Baby was lying in her bed staring at the ceiling as Sade sung in the background about how love was stronger than pride, thinking about the day she met Semaj.
Sheâd been on her way to class when she got a text from Mona asking if she could skip her next class because there was something huge that she had to tell her. Baby wasnât the type to skip class and hated even considering it but did it anyways since Mona insisted. But as soon as she heard what the âsomething hugeâ was that Mona just had to share, she regretted it.
âLook!â Mona gushed, waving her hand in the air while making sure to give an extra wiggle to her ring finger. âMemphis popped the question, and I said YES! Isnât my ring gorgeous?â
It felt like the hardest thing sheâd ever attempted for Baby, to keep a neutral face and fake her happiness for her best friend.
âYes, itâs⦠amazing!â she pushed out with a tongue that felt as heavy as a ton of bricks.
Baby smiled and tried to swallow down the lump in her throat, while Mona continued chatting away excitedly over the details of his proposal, but the lump only seemed to grow. Ever since the first time sheâd laid eyes on Memphis, she couldnât get him out of her mind. However, she kept her distance because Mona was clear about wanting him, and Baby never wanted a man to come between them. Even with that, it still felt like she died a little every time Mona mentioned how sheâd seen him or gone out with him⦠and it definitely killed her to hear the details of when theyâd made love. But now, she had to endure this? He was marrying Mona?
âAnd thatâs not just itâ¦â Mona started, her lips spreading into a wide grin as she hesitated for dramatic effect. âIâm pregnant!â
She was crushed. Sheâd fought through Monaâs tales of their whirlwind romance, telling herself that at some point heâd moved on because he couldnât really like her⦠couldnât possibly. But now there was no avoiding it. They were engaged and having a baby. The man sheâd crushed on, nearly obsessively, since the moment she saw him, was going to marry her best friend. It felt like Godâs cruelest joke.
Her heart was beneath her feet as she walked home with her head hanging nearly between her shoulders. The piercing pain going through her heart didnât lessen any since sheâd first heard Monaâs good news.
âAye, ma, why you lookinâ so down?â
Normally, Baby wouldâve ignored him, but she was feeling so low, any bit of kindness was welcomed. Looking up, she was greeted by a gentle smile and kind eyes. Upon further scrutiny, she noticed the tattoos on his arms and his street swag. Although he was dressed neatly in a pair of dress pants and a lightweight, long-sleeved sweater with the sleeves pulled up to his elbows, it was obvious that he wasnât the typical businessman.
âI just had a pretty disappointing day,â Baby shared, not sure exactly why she was opening up.
